In George Lockyer’s new book, Fire Stations of Aotearoa New Zealand, the author hits the road once more. A retired volunteer Station Officer himself, he visits a selection of the 653 fire stations the length and breadth of the country, both career and volunteer stations. Interviewing mainly Fire Chiefs and Deputies, the author delves into the motivation behind becoming a firefighter and how the Fire Brigade is a vital part of the community. As usual with George’s interviews, he also attempts to get the personal stories, whether they be humourous, poignant or heart-warming. A brief history of each Brigade is included as well as a glimpse into the structure and training of FENZ.
